Jeffery Shaw from Melbourne, Australia is a new media artist famous for pioneering the use of digital technologies in criteria such as expanded cinema, interactive art, etc.

I am specifically interested in the way he blends these arts with new technologies. In my research, I found out that after leaving Australia in 1965, Shaw relocated in Milan and studied sculpture.

He is also the founding member of art groups Artist Placement Group and Eventstructure Research Group. Last but not least, he has also won numerous awards such as the Immagine Elettronica Prize and Oribe Award.


In the research, I focused on his artwork Corpocinema. In this artwork, the central feature is an air-inflated PVC dome with a diameter of 700cm and moving films and slides are projected from the outside of the dome. This results In a 3-dimesional volume unlike traditional cinemas. Moreover, different actions can be taken to affect transformations and reconstitions of the images. For example, interactions included the the dripping fire extinguishing foam that makes the projected image disintegrated, deflating white polythene tubing that created a complex growing surface on the image, and more. 


Corpocinema hence is an experience of expanded cinema as its aspects push beyond traditional, single-screen, one-way viewing to incorporate other media, live performances, and immersive environments with its unique settings of dome-shaped immersive screen.


The art piece have also demonstrated some of the ‘Illusions’ of cinema by Jean-Louis Baudry which is the illusion of movement from still as the artwork displayed multiple moving video clips. Also, the illusion of reality impression was shown since it goes beyond single screen for display and used a dome as the ‘screen’, which blends with the reality as the cinema can be seen from different perspectives.

Topic: The art of Danh Vo Student name: Dennis Luk Student number: 60177050 Danh Vo is a Vietnamese artist whose works address the issues of identity and belonging. This makes me quite interested in why most of his artworks addresses these issues.   After some quick research, I found out that his family fled from South Vietnam and settled in Denmark in 1979 and this may inspired him to create artwork as a migrant.   For my research this week, I focused on Tropeaolum he made in 2023 which deals with how specific objects carry stories and become intertwined with significant moments in history, such as global conflicts and personal experiences, which resembles collecting and structuring memory.
