Stephanie Dinkins is a female artist from the New York, United States. She specifies in art about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and she intertwines emerging technologies with her artworks such as sculpture, code installation, etc. She uses her artworks as a powerful tool to voice out for ethnic minorities especially the black and brown communities when it comes to race, gender and power.

Her aim is ‘create a unique culturally attuned AI entity in collaboration with coders, engineers and in close consultation with local communities of color that reflects and is empowered to work toward the goals of its community’.

This week, I put effort into researching her artworks ‘Data Trust’ and ‘Secret Garden’. For ‘Data Trust’,  it is an immersive experience featuring real-time AI-generated processing of stories shared in the gallery space, which makes it an experiment in collective memory. After interacting in the conversational area, immersive projections which are animated by generative AI will project a narrative around the walls of the gallery. At last, the data generated through this project will be made publicly accessible, showing that AI is not only a computer program, but it is also cultural, generational, and deeply embedded in living experience.

‘Secret Garden’, is an immersive art installation and online experience that focus on black women’s stories. Through 3-channel video, sound (narrated stories and singing

bowls),  cameras and audio, viewers can get to know more about the stories about black women. The project combines narrative and dynamic visual feedback to story the reception of black women. If not being at the site, an alternate way of online viewing is also available. Audience are put into a virtual garden that consists of various flowers and they can move freely in the garden.

Inside the garden, audience can interact with different characters and have conversations with them. This shows that AI usage can be much more than a lifeless machine code.
